A 24-year sentence has been given to a 33-year-old Italian, Filippo Ferlazzo, for fatally beating a Nigerian man, Alika Ogorchukwu, who was physically disabled. The court of Assizes of Macerata handed this verdict to Ferlazzo from Salerno near Naples on September 27, 2023, for the aggravated voluntary murder.
The Nigerian street hawker, Ogorchukwu, was assaulted and killed in broad daylight as he was hawking on the streets of Civitanova Marche. The attack took place in the Province of Macerata, March Region of Italy, on July 29, 2022.
In a horrific and fatal attack that occurred in front of numerous onlookers, the convict used the crutches that the deceased used to walk to beat Ogorchukwu to death, then straddled him, crushing his neck and head.
On July 30, 2022, Ferlazzo was arrested on murder charges. The Italian Police stated that they believe Ferlazzo attacked Ogorchukwu after he had asked Ferlazzo’s girlfriend to buy a handkerchief.
Following the incident, two protest marches were organized in a town on Italy’s Adriatic coast to demand justice for the deceased Nigerian whose death gained global attention.
In the meantime, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed her contentment over the justice served. She commended the Nigerian Mission in Rome for their efforts in this and other cases involving Nigerians.
In her statement issued by NiDCOM spokesperson, Gabriel Odu, she said, “I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there has to be consequences for actions.” Dabiri-Erewa also urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to remain law-abiding, excel in their endeavors, and never forget home by giving back to their homeland.
